Frequently asked questions

A quick guide to the analyzer

How do I set up a position?

Drag pieces on the board to arrange them. Drag a spare piece onto a square to add it, or drag a piece off the board to remove it. Select the side whose turn it is, and check that both kings and the other pieces match the game you want to study. An incorrect side to move can completely change the answer.

What does Play do?

Play starts an analysis session and highlights a recommended move for the current side after a short search, usually around two seconds. It analyzes the position without moving a piece automatically.

What does Move do?

After Play has produced a recommendation, press Move to apply it to the board. While the analysis session is active, the engine analyzes the next position too. Wait for its next suggestion and use Move again to follow the line.

What does Stop do?

Stop exits the active analysis session. You can adjust the position and press Play when you are ready to start a new session.

How do I go back?

Use Back to undo the latest applied move in the current line. Stop the analysis when you want to leave the session, then use Back to return to the position you want to investigate. Press Play to analyze it again.

Can I import or copy a position?

Open Import or copy a position (FEN). Paste a FEN position into the field and choose Load position. To keep the current position for later, choose Copy FEN and save the copied text in your own notes. After loading, check the board and side to move before pressing Play.

Does flipping the board change the position?

No. Flip changes the viewing direction so you can look from either player's side. It does not change the pieces, the rules, or whose turn it is.

Why might a suggestion change?

The engine searches possible replies. A different position, side to move, or amount of search time can lead to a different choice. Treat a suggestion as an analysis aid and investigate the opponent's response.

Is this Stockfish?

No. This analyzer uses its bundled GarboChess engine. Stockfish is a separate engine; see the engine explanation for the distinction.

Are my positions saved?

No. The site does not provide accounts or save your positions. Copy the FEN into your own notes if you want to return to a position later.

When should I use engine help?

Use it for practice, puzzles, and reviewing completed games. Follow the rules of your chess platform or event, and do not use outside help during a game where it is prohibited.
